This middle or high school art lesson can be taught in the classroom or via distance learning. It includes a presentation with an edited video demonstration in PowerPoint and Google Slide format. It also comes with a handout containing student examples so students can easily see the presentation from their own devices.

These can be shared with your students through Google Classroom or emailed to them. The presentation shows step-by-step how to create a visual journal page. Students learn how to be expressive using a variety of art media and learn how to experiment and layer art materials to create depth and interest. They learn how to visually tell a story or express an idea by creating a unique representation of the feelings associated with the event they are illustrating. It includes lots of examples and stresses the importance of developing your own personal style.

A visual journal is a safe place for students to work out their thoughts and ideas in a safe environment. It helps them develop creative thinking skills and follow their intuition. In the art room visual journals can be an ongoing, weekly, monthly, or daily assignment. This presentation introduces the journal process to students in a fun detailed way and offers lots of samples and images for inspiration.

The included worksheets work great as sub plans, and early finisher assignments, for students on home instruction or in ISS. They are easy to follow for substitute teachers or self-directed learning when the art teacher is unavailable.
