Encourage your students to slow down, focus, and build confidence in their drawing with this X-Grid Beginner Drawing Art Lesson. Inspired by neurographic art, this easy art lesson is the perfect beginning-of-year art project for junior high or high school Introduction to Art classes.
This no-prep art lesson appeals to even the most apathetic students. The sports- and animal-themed reference images enable all students to create a work of art that reflects their unique interests and personalities. It reinforces the Elements and Principles of Art, including line, balance, unity, and basic color theory. It works well as a drawing-skills unit, a substitute lesson, a social-emotional learning (SEL) art lesson, or a multi-day project.
In this beginner drawing lesson, students will learn how to use the X-Grid method to position shapes accurately before focusing on details. By breaking an image into smaller sections and concentrating on placement first, students can enhance their observational drawing skills, develop patience, and reduce the frustration that often accompanies complex drawings.
Once the composition is mapped out, students will refine their work using pen-and-ink techniques, simple background designs, and neurographic-style lines, which feature rounded intersections and a thick-to-thin line flow. The lesson concludes with an accessible coloring process in which students will learn to use light markers, watercolor washes, or optional mixed-media techniques to enhance their linework without obscuring it.
This lesson is a crowd pleaser in my beginner art classes and is usually the third lesson in my scaffolded Introduction to art curriculum sequence. It usually follows a neurographic art project and a negative space drawing with an X-Grid lesson. In the first project, students build confidence with line control and learn to layer light colors in a line drawing. The second project teaches them to observe positive and negative spaces and how to draw using an X-Grid. This lesson encompasses all of those concepts, but when it follows the other two projects, it acts as a review, pulling everything together. While it can be used as a standalone lesson, if you want to break it down further for skeptical beginners, I offer all three projects in a money-saving Introduction to Drawing for Beginners Bundle.
