Product Description
Dragon Art Project | Middle School Fun Character Drawing Lesson
This Dragon Art Project is a high-interest middle school art sub plan, fantasy drawing lesson, and early finisher activity in which students design their own original dragon masks. Students explore five unique dragon archetypes, intentionally plan a color harmony, mix and match dragon features, and create imaginative fantasy creatures instead of copying existing dragons.
Students love the creative freedom of designing dragons, while teachers appreciate how flexible and easy this lesson is to use. The resource includes 10 printable dragon mask worksheets, 2 bonus “Design Your Own Dragon” worksheet sets (planning + drawing pages), and a 25-slide teacher slideshow. These bonus pages encourage students to invent an entirely original dragon species or combine features from multiple dragon types to create imaginative hybrid dragons.
HOW THIS LESSON WORKS:
Students begin by selecting a dragon type and planning their dragon’s personality, mood, and color scheme. They then mix and match horns, eyes, mouths, crests, and dragon symbols to create an original dragon mask that reflects their own creative ideas.
The planning pages provide enough structure for students to work independently while leaving plenty of room for imagination. Because every student makes different design choices, each finished dragon is unique, creative, and display-worthy.
FLEXIBLE FOR DIFFERENT CLASSROOM NEEDS
This lesson can take one to three class periods depending on student age, ability level, and the amount of detail required.
For a shorter activity, students can complete one planning page and one dragon mask worksheet.
To extend the project, students can:
• Invent a brand-new dragon species
• Create a hybrid dragon by combining multiple dragon types
• Add scales, textures, symbols, and decorative details
• Design a fantasy habitat or background
• Transfer the finished dragon to larger drawing paper
• Outline the design with a fine-tip black marker

This resource works especially well for middle school art, introductory high school art, visual arts, drawing, fantasy illustration, creature design, character design, and enrichment classes.
Students do more than draw a dragon—they become dragon designers. By making intentional choices about shape, color, texture, personality, and symbolic details, students learn how artists communicate ideas through fantasy creature design while creating original artwork they are excited to share.
