Fantasy Art Lesson | Design an Elf Mask Fun Drawing Project

This Design an Elf Mask art project is a high-interest middle school art sub plan, fantasy character design lesson, and early finisher activity in which students create their own original elf masks. Students explore five unique elf themes, intentionally plan a color palette, mix and match elf features, and design imaginative fantasy characters instead of copying existing elves.

Students love the creative freedom of designing their own fantasy characters, while teachers appreciate how flexible and easy this lesson is to use. The resource includes 10 printable elf worksheets and a 26-slide teacher slideshow. It can also be taught without the slideshow, making it perfect for emergency art sub plans, independent work, or one-to-three-day drawing projects.

HOW THIS LESSON WORKS

Students begin by selecting an elf theme and planning their elf’s personality, style, magical world, and color palette. They then mix and match hairstyles, ears, eyes, mouths, and decorative accessories to create an original elf mask that reflects their own creative ideas.

The planning pages provide enough structure for students to work independently while leaving plenty of room for imagination. Because every student makes different design choices, each finished elf is unique, creative, and display-worthy.

FLEXIBLE FOR DIFFERENT CLASSROOM NEEDS

This lesson can take one to three class periods depending on student age, ability level, and the amount of detail required.

For a shorter activity, students can complete one planning page and one elf mask worksheet.

To extend the project, students can:

  • Add intricate hairstyles, jewelry, or magical accessories
  • Create detailed clothing patterns and textures
  • Design a fantasy forest, winter landscape, or magical background
  • Develop a backstory for their elf character
  • Transfer the finished elf to larger drawing paper
  • Outline the design with a fine-tip black marker
  • Add colored pencil, marker, or mixed-media details

Students do more than draw an elf—they become fantasy character designers. By making intentional choices about color, shape, personality, accessories, and magical details, students learn how artists communicate ideas through character design while creating original artwork they’re excited to share.
