Product Description

This engaging middle and high school Black History Month art lesson is an excellent resource for enriching classroom activities, especially during Black History Month or throughout the year. Students explore how artist Romare Bearden conveyed his life experiences and memories through collage. Inspired by Bearden’s work, students create their own collages rooted in personal experiences and memories.

Designed to require no drawing skills, this project is ideal for beginner art classes, ensuring all students can succeed. It can be easily adapted for distance learning, homeschooling, or in-class instruction. The downloadable slideshow and video demonstration simplify the process with clear, step-by-step guidance, plenty of examples, and inspiring collage ideas. Students use magazines, torn paper, and found materials to craft vibrant compositions that visually express a treasured memory.

Both the video and the slideshow clearly outline each step of the lesson, illustrating how to incorporate art elements and design principles. Repetition and variation are explored to develop compelling compositions and effective use of space. Students also learn to apply fundamental design principles such as focal points, movement, and balance, enriching their understanding of artistic expression within a meaningful Black History Month context.

This Romare Bearden-inspired mixed media collage art lesson includes:

  • A Google Slideshow with lots of examples of student collages
  • A video demonstration of the collage technique
  • An art analysis worksheet guide that can be completed digitally
  • A personal art planning guide worksheet that can be completed digitally
  • A reflection worksheet that can be completed digitally
  • PDF versions of the handouts and worksheets

The slideshow introduces students to the collage artist Romare Bearden and explains how he created mixed-media collages about his life growing up in the rural south and the time he spent in jazz clubs during the Harlem Renaissance. Romare Bearden used color, texture, and pattern to visually express the feelings he associated with his memories.

Students complete a critical analysis of one of Romare Bearden’s works and create a mixed media collage art project that represents their own favorite memory. They use color, texture, and pattern to reflect the feeling or emotion connected to their personal memory. This lesson helps students see how they can visually express a personal experience in a way they couldn’t with words alone. The design principles of repetition and variation are emphasized in the collage.
