Sci Fi Art Lesson | Character Mask Fun Drawing Project

This Design a Sci-Fi Character Mask art project is a high-interest middle school art sub plan, futuristic character design lesson, and early finisher activity in which students create their own original sci-fi characters. Students explore five different character types, intentionally plan a color palette, mix and match features, and transform simple mask outlines into imaginative characters from futuristic worlds.

Students love the creative freedom of inventing characters that can be strange, funny, mysterious, powerful, robotic, otherworldly—or completely unexpected. Teachers appreciate how much room the project gives for individual creativity while still providing enough structure for students to work independently.

The resource includes 10 printable sci-fi character worksheets and an accompanying teacher slideshow. It can also be taught without the slideshow, making it perfect for emergency art sub plans, independent work, early finishers, or one-to-three-day drawing projects.

HOW THIS LESSON WORKS

Students begin by selecting a sci-fi character and imagining its personality, appearance, purpose, and world. They choose a color palette and use the planning menu for inspiration before designing their final character.

Students can mix and match suggested eyes, mouths, head features, textures, and decals—or invent completely new features of their own.

The mask outline is intentionally simple. It acts only as a starting point, giving students the freedom to transform it through their own ideas.

An alien might grow extra eyes, antennae, unusual skin patterns, or strange facial features. A robot could be covered in buttons, screens, wires, bolts, warning symbols, or colorful mechanical parts. An astronaut might have a completely personalized space suit and a unique character visible inside the helmet. A cyborg can combine human features with futuristic technology, while a space monster can become furry, slimy, rocky, scaly, tentacled, fiery, cosmic—or something no one has imagined before.

Because students make their own artistic decisions, no two finished characters need to look alike.

FLEXIBLE FOR DIFFERENT CLASSROOM NEEDS

This lesson can take one to three class periods depending on student age, ability level, and the amount of detail required.

For a shorter activity, students can complete one planning page and one sci-fi character mask worksheet.

To extend the project, students can:

  • Add additional eyes, antennae, horns, hair, robotic parts, or creature features
  • Experiment with scales, fur, slime, metal, circuits, craters, or other surface textures
  • Add symbols, decals, buttons, patches, planets, stars, or futuristic accessories
  • Create a planet, spaceship, laboratory, space station, or futuristic background
  • Develop a name, personality, powers, job, or backstory for their character
  • Design the character’s full body or space suit
  • Transfer the finished design to larger drawing paper
  • Outline selected details with a fine-tip black marker
  • Experiment with colored pencil, marker, crayon, watercolor, collage, or mixed-media details

GRADE LEVELS

Recommended for grades 6–12.

This resource works especially well for middle school art, introductory high school art, visual arts, drawing, character design, sci-fi illustration, color theory, STEAM connections, and enrichment classes.

Students do more than color a sci-fi mask—they become character designers. By making intentional choices about color, shape, personality, facial features, textures, technology, and imaginative details, students learn how artists communicate ideas visually while creating an original character that belongs to a world of their own invention.
