Middle School Mixed Media Collage Art Project – Neurographic Insect Collage & Symmetry
This mixed media collage art lesson combines neurographic-inspired drawing, reflective symmetry, and colorful torn-paper collage into one creative insect project. Students create detailed symmetrical insect designs using flowing lines and patterns, then place them against magazine collage backgrounds filled with color and texture.
Designed for middle school art and beginner high school art classes, this project gives students practice with several important art concepts, including line, shape, symmetry, movement, focal point, contrast, and asymmetrical balance. It can also be adapted for upper elementary students.
One of my favorite things about this lesson is how differently the finished projects turn out. Even when students start with the same insect template, their linework, color choices, and collage arrangements make each piece unique.

How the Project Works
Step 1: Create a Symmetrical Insect
Students choose an insect template and begin developing their design. They can work with a complete outline or use a half-insect template to practice reflective symmetry.
Using a simple graphite-transfer technique, students create mirrored designs while learning how symmetry works in nature and art.
Step 2: Add Neurographic-Inspired Linework
Students fill their insects with flowing, intersecting lines inspired by neurographic art. They round intersections, vary line thickness, and experiment with organic shapes to create interesting patterns.
Step 3: Make a Mixed Media Collage Background
Using torn pieces of magazine pages, students create colorful collage backgrounds. They experiment with overlapping shapes, color relationships, texture, and visual unity while arranging their paper pieces into a balanced composition.
Step 4: Bring the Composition Together
Students cut out their finished insects and arrange them off-center on the collage background. They explore how an insect with reflective symmetry can become the focal point of an asymmetrically balanced composition.
Additional marks and repeated shapes help create movement and connect the different parts of the artwork.
Art Concepts Covered
- Reflective Symmetry: Creating mirrored insect designs through drawing and transfer techniques
- Line and Pattern: Using neurographic-inspired lines, rounded intersections, and varied line weights
- Mixed Media Art: Combining drawing, markers, and torn-paper collage
- Color and Texture: Selecting and arranging magazine scraps to create visual interest
- Focal Point and Contrast: Making the insect stand out against the background
- Asymmetrical Balance: Arranging elements to create balance without identical sides
- Movement and Unity: Using repetition and visual connections throughout the composition
Easy to Differentiate
The included insect templates make this lesson adaptable to different ages and abilities. Students who need more structure can use the complete outlines, while students ready for a challenge can complete the missing half of an insect.
There is also plenty of room for creative decision-making, from developing the line patterns to choosing colors and arranging the final collage.
Materials Needed
- Printed insect templates
- Drawing paper or cardstock
- Pencils and erasers

When to Use This Mixed Media Collage Lesson
This project works well for middle school art projects, high school Art 1, mixed media art units, symmetry lessons, and introductory drawing classes.
The insect theme also makes it a great spring art project, but the skills and materials make it useful throughout the school year.
The included slideshow, printable worksheets, instructional demonstrations, and assessment materials give you everything you need to guide students through the project from start to finish.
This mixed media collage project gives students the opportunity to explore symmetry, line, texture, and composition while combining several techniques in one artwork.
Recommended Grade Levels
Grades 6–12, especially middle school art and introductory high school visual arts.
This reflective-symmetry, neurographic-inspired insect mixed-media collage lesson helps students develop drawing and composition skills while experimenting with expressive linework and colorful mixed-media techniques.
Instead of simply coloring an insect worksheet, students create a personalized artwork that brings together symmetry, movement, contrast, and collage.
